Welcome to the Space Coast Orchid Society
The Platinum Coast Orchid Society, a non-profit organization, was founded and became a chartered affiliate of The American Orchid Society in 1956. It was renamed the Space Coast Orchid Society in 2026. Our purpose is to promote conservation of orchids and to grow them for personal enjoyment and satisfaction. We are located in central Florida in the Merritt Island / Cocoa / Cocoa Beach area. It is commonly proclaimed that ‘Everyone can grow orchids’. Members of the Space Coast Orchid Society not only believe in that claim, but strive to help each other and new members to make it a reality. In fact, the Society was founded for anyone who has an interest in the study, development, enjoyment and use of the orchidaceae.
NAME CHANGE FOR PLATINUM COAST ORCHID SOCIETY
After several months of discussion, the membership of the Platinum Coast Orchid Society voted on Wednesday, October 14th 2026, to change the name of our organization to the Space Coast Orchid Society by a majority vote to amend Article 1, Section1, Sentence 1 of our bylaws. This name change becomes effective immediately.
However, there will be a transitional period wherein AOS recognition, State of Florida registration, documents, contracts, the website, Facebook, show advertisement and other organizational name bearing entities will display the new name as Space Coast Orchid Society, formerly Platinum Coast Orchid Society. Sometime around the latter part of 2027 or the beginning of 2028, the tag “formerly PCOS” will be dropped.
In addition to the name change, we will need a new logo. A contest for members of the Society to submit their designs for the new logo has been announced. The deadline to submit the artwork to Carolyn Anderson is Friday, November 6th. The Board will review the submittals and forward to the membership the top designs. Members will vote for the winning logo at the regularly scheduled Membership Meeting on Wednesday, November 11, 2026.
I want to thank all the members for the respect they showed one another in this time of change. Although we’ll have a new name, we are still the same volunteer organization whose passion for orchids really identifies who we are.
